The MIEX® Technology, utilizing the MIEX® Resin, was developed over an extended period stretching back to the mid 1980s. Orica Watercare and two leading Australian research organizations (Commonwealth Scientific Industrial Research Organisation and South Australian Water Corporation) worked together to develop a unique ion exchange process for the removal of dissolved organic carbon from potable water sources.
The first MIEX® Resin to be created and introduced to the market was this MIEX® DOC Resin, a high capacity ion exchange resin with a magnetized component. The combination of this magnetic resin with a unique continuous ion exchange process offered water utilities a cost-effective and environmentally friendly DOC removal process, capable of achieving new standards in water quality.
As research and development continued, new applications using MIEX® Resin quickly presented themselves. As such, a range of specialty resins have been developed that can be applied to water, wastewater, and process streams in both the municipal and industrial markets.
History
In August of 2000, after extensive preparatory work in developing the resin formulation and manufacturing process, the first batch of MIEX® resin was produced by the resin manufacturing plant in Deerpark, Australia, just outside of Melbourne.
In July 2001 the first application plant was started up by South Australia Water for the removal of DOC. This treatment plant is situated at Mount Pleasant, a small rural community in the Adelaide Hills, about an hours drive from the city of Adelaide.
Later in 2001 the next MIEX® water treatment plant commenced operation in Western Australia. This plant is located at Wanneroo (a northern suburb of Perth) and is a much larger MIEX® treatment plant capable of treating 112MLD of water. This plant is owned and operated by the Water Corporation of Western Australia and achieved operating efficiencies significantly better than the design parameters. This operational performance has been a source of great satisfaction to both the Water Corporation of Western Australia and Orica.
With numerous installations and projects in design on four continents, the MIEX® technology has now established itself as an innovative and effective ion exchange technology for water and wastewater treatment applications globally.
