County Fixing Stone Creek's Water By Malynda Fulton, The Valdosta Daily Times, Ga
VALDOSTA, GA -- Standard Contractors was chosen to oversee construction of a new water treatment facility during the Lowndes County Board of Commissioners regular session Tuesday. The facility will include a masonry building and piping for the MIEX (magnetic ion exchange) treatment process. It will be located at the North Lowndes Water System site.
"Through construction of this facility, we will finally be able to address the issues in Stone Creek," said Commission Vice Chairman Richard Lee. Lee said that there have been ongoing problems with wastewater pouring in Stone Creek for more than 10 years.
"We have taken numerous avenues to correct the issues and been unsuccessful," Lee explained. "At one point, we even tried excessive flushing, which is extremely wasteful. People have been concerned for a long time and now we finally have something that will fix the problem."
Lowndes County Utilities Director Mike Allen said that Lowndes County is the first county in the state to use the MIEX treatment process, which removes target contaminants that create byproducts from water and wastewater streams.
Standard Contractors quoted a price of $999,181.15 to construct the facility. Standard Contractors was awarded the bid over Radney Plumbing and RTD Construction.
